Kim, 20 from Texas: Studying and running her own business
Thursday 20th September, 2007As you may have noticed, here at Krupt we are really interested in YOU and what people get upto all around the world in their daily lives.
Recently we came across a cool little chick from Texas by the name of Kim Nguyen. She studies at the University of Texas and on the side, is doing a little tshirt quilt hussle! Here is Kim with one her recent quilts - here at Krupt we think it rocks and so we sat her down in a room alone by herself and told her to talk to herself…so this is what she said, according to our recording device

I’m 20, attending the University of Texas at Austin and majoring in Architectural Engineering and minoring in Textiles. I fully intend on becoming an architectural engineer for all practical purposes, but I’ve always had a passion for sewing and textile design…which I now maintain in my small T-Shirt Quilting business.
I started sewing when I was 16. To practice (and save money), I just cut up a bunch of old T-Shirts and sewed them together into a skirts. I wore my first “T-Shirt Skirt” creation to school, and got a lot of attention from classmates and teachers. A couple days later, I got a few requests to make T-Shirt skirts…so that’s when my little businesses started.
I made T-Shirt skirts all though my senior year of high school, when I got the idea of making T-Shirt Quilts. Upon graduation, many students have accumulated massive amounts of high school T-Shirts from being part of different organizations. These shirts usually ended up at the back of the closet bc people still treasure the memories, but don’t want to wear those T-Shirts to college… so I got several commissions from friends and parents who wanted their T-Shirts preserved in a quilt…and I’ve just been doing that ever since!
Now, most of my commissions are from high school/college students and from parents as graduation gifts and birthday gifts. I hire and train other students on occasions when I have big orders, but most of the time, it’s just me enjoying a fun side-job
I think it’ll be a slow growth for my business, especially bc I’m a college student, but my quilts have made a lot of people happy, so I’m pretty sure I’ll keep it up for a long time.
There you have it. Kim Nguyen from Texas - check out her website at www.kimwindesigns.com
